Frequently asked questions about family photos | As we head into the busier season for family photography in Rochester, NY, I thought I’d answer some of the questions that get asked most often about family photos. And, since I’m getting ready to open up my summer family sessions, I’m mixing in photos from one of my favorite family sessions last summer!

What time of day do you do family photos? I plan all my sessions within two hours of sunset (or sometimes sunrise) for that magical, and most flattering light. Outside of these golden hours, the sun can create harsh bright spots and shadows. I do everything I can to make sure you’ll look amazing for your photos, including making sure you have the best light!
Where do you do your family photos? My locations vary based on the time of year, but I do have a handful of favorite spots. I know the lighting like the back of my hand in these places, and can focus on you and your family without worrying about the light. I am most often on the east side (Fairport, Pittsford, Henrietta, or Mendon), or in the city.

What happens if it rains the day of our family photos? If it’s going to rain during your session time, we’ll reschedule! I’ll contact you to find an alternate date that works with both our schedules.
What if someone gets sick? We reschedule for this too! I want your whole family to feel good the day of your photos so you can all have fun. I also try to limit my own exposure to illness so I don’t get someone else’s family sick. (Which is why we would also reschedule if I were to get sick!).

What do we wear for our family photos? I’ve actually blogged ideas for this! I also send you a session prep and style guide when you book that is loaded with ideas for what to wear. It covers everything from how to coordinate with one another, how to pick colors that’ll look good with your setting, and what to do about the little details, right down to your footwear. I’m also on hand every step of the way! I’ve had families text or email me outfits they’re considering. I’m always happy to help.

What happens during our family photo session, and what if we don’t know how to be “candid” for photos? I usually start by getting that traditional, everyone look at the camera and smile photo. I move really quickly, and as soon as I’m sure everyone has looked and smiled, we move on to the photos that are more fun. I will give you directions, like tickle your kids, give someone kisses or hugs, throw your toddler in the air (if you’re comfortable doing it), and lots more! I’ll give you an idea of what to expect in your prep and style guide ahead of time. I’ll also communicate throughout your entire session, so you never have to wonder what you should be doing and can focus on having fun with your family.

What’s your photography style? I like true color photos that’ll still look amazing hanging in your home for decades to come. I love sunlight shining in behind you when it cooperates. I love a mix of posed and candid. I want your images to feel natural, fun, and full of love.

How many photos will we receive? It depends on your session type. Most of my families do mini sessions. For those, I promise a minimum of 10 digital images, but usually you’ll receive a LOT more than the minimum. Most of my family mini sessions receive somewhere between 25 and 65 unique images. (More if you choose to receive black and white copies of some of your images!) There are no limits or additional charges.
Can I print my photos? Absolutely! You’ll receive your images in an online gallery with a print release and will be able to download them to your computer or tablet. You’ll have the option of printing through me if you’d like for the highest quality (museum quality!) prints. You’ll be able to print wherever you choose though.

Are pets allowed at our family photo session? As long as the location we’ll be at allows pets, they are welcome! I love dogs and since I have a cat myself, bringing your pup along to your family photos gives me a chance to get my puppy fix! Pets are an important part of the family. I love including them.

What is the turnaround time from the day of our session, to the day we receive our images? My contract promises your images within three weeks. It rarely takes me more than two though, and sometimes even less!

How do I book my own family photo session? Click here to see what’s currently available! Or go to my contact page and sign up for my email list to get first dibs whenever seasonal sessions are released. I send four emails a year when I open a new season for booking so you can get early access without feeling spammed.
