Family Photographer Rochester NY | Spring is one of the prettiest times in Rochester, NY (I mean, we’re not the “flower city” for nothing!). I love living someplace where we get to see the changing of the seasons. The extra sunshine and blooming flowers always bring such a feeling of happiness and hope. It creates a beautiful backdrop and is one of the most popular times of the year for family portraits!
When you start to think about family photos, the biggest question after the “when” is “what to we wear?” When you book with me, one of the things you’ll get is my awesome prep and style guide. There are tons of tips for what to wear for different seasons and settings, as well as how to coordinate multiple outfits. I’m going to share a few tips for spring family photos here!
The first thing to think about when planning outfits is color. I love light colors and pastels in the spring. Light blue is one of my favorites – it goes with everything! You can pair blue with neutrals, like white or gray, or other light colors, like pink, aqua, green, purple, or yellow. I always suggest picking colors that coordinate (don’t match!). If you find a pattern you love, the easiest way to coordinate colors between multiple outfits, is to pull from the colors used in the pattern.
And don’t be afraid to mix patterns! Avoid more than one bold pattern, but you can absolutely mix more delicate patterns with a bold one. Introducing different textures is another great way to give your outfits some variety and interest so that they don’t look flat, without making them look too busy.
Once you have your base outfits, add layers! It can still be cool in the spring, so a jean jacket, a light sweater, or tights under a dress are a great way to add style, as well as a little bit of warmth if you need it.
My last piece of advice is don’t forget the footwear! Cute sandals, casual dress shoes, or even stylish tennis shoes will look great. Make sure your shoes go with the vibe of your clothing. I would avoid everyday sneakers, especially if they are very bright, dark, or dirty!
